EU SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE DIDN?T GET TO STEPANAKERT

20 2007, Kaynak : Azg
.?[°p="justify">EU Special Representative to South Caucasus Peter Semneby after several meetings in Yerevan was to leave for Nagorno Karabakh on June 17. Several meetings were scheduled between Peter Semneby, NKR President Arkadi Khukasian, Foreign Minister Georgi Petrosian and representatives of NGOs. But Sebneby didn’t get to Karabakh, though he had got over half of the way.

po Kand, who got to Stepanakert without the EU Special Representative, didn’t give any explanation for Peter Semenby’s hasty return to Yerevan. They only emphasized that Semneby would certainly visit Karabakh in the near future.

The advisors informed that they discussed social-economic and public-political issues during several meetings in Karabakh. According to EU advisors, the EU may take part in the process of the settlement of Karabakh conflict. Their main task is to provide collaboration and contact in the conflict area.

The EU Special Representative qualified the May 12 parliamentary elections as "mainly ‎free and fair" during their meeting with the Prime Minister of RA Serj Sargsian.

"Armenia may become an example for its neighbors", underscored Peter Semneby.

Peter Semneby and Serj Sargsian had a detailed discussion about the process of the settlement of Karabakh conflict. "The European Union is interested in the process of the settlement of Karabakh conflict; not only that Armenia and Azerbaijan are important partners for EU, but also with the intention of creating an atmosphere of confidence and providing more assistance".

The Prime Minister expressed his concern over the periodic warlike announcements of Azerbaijani president and the increasing military expenses in Azerbaijani state budget in contrast to the Armenian optimistic constructive approach and attitude to the peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict.

Serj Sargsian cannot imagine how the Azerbaijani president will explain his people the meaning of those warlike announcements in the case of compromise settlement.

The Prime Minister also informed about the coming presidential elections in Nagorno Karabakh and that it was not clear yet what kind of attitude would have the new NKR president.

Understanding the concern of the Prime Minister of RA over the warlike announcements of Azerbaijan, the EU Special Representative Peter Semneby tried to explain it as a policy of Azerbaijani media and told that the Azerbaijani president didn’t have that kind of attitude recently.

Serj Sargsian re-confirmed the attitude of Armenia and underscored, "compromise cannot be unilateral, and there is no other reasonable way than the compromise".

According to the Prime Minister, Armenia is ready to activate the contacts on various levels and create an atmosphere of confidence, but there are no positive impulses from the Azerbaijani side.
